Yucca, also called Spanish bayonet, is a cactus which thrives in the deserts of the Southwest. Natives have traditionally used yucca for both food and medicine. Yucca root was originally used by early settlers as an all-purpose soap because of its sudsing ability.

Steroidal saponins, which provide yucca with this foaming action, are responsible for helping to reduce inflammation and dissolve obstructions in the joints. Yucca saponins actually increase elimination of toxins via the blood, kidneys, liver and lymph, thus decreasing toxic conditions in the body which can build up in the joints. Also, yucca saponins are believed to promote the body’s production of cortisone. Thus, yucca has been used with many chronic, degenerative diseases, including arthritis and rheumatism.

Studies have now confirmed yucca is especially helpful for relieving arthritis. A double-blind study conducted at the National Arthritis Medical Clinic in California’s Desert Hot Springs and published in the Journal of Applied Nutrition showed yucca helped lessen pain, stiffness, and swelling in 61% of participants suffering with arthritis.

Yucca also exhibits antibacterial and antifungal qualities, and helps balance intestinal flora.

Researchers are currently studying yucca for possible cancer and tumor-fighting abilities.
