Homeopathic medicine significantly increased in popularity in Europe and the United States during the nineteenth century, resulting from its success in treating infectious disease epidemics during that era. Homeopathic medicine is an approach that utilizes ultramolecular (beyond molecules) doses of medicines to strengthen a person’s immune and defense system rather than directly attacking the microbial agents. For example, homeopathic preparations of Echinacea angustifolia have demonstrated immunomodulatory activity in randomized studies, and have also been used to modulate inflammatory processes in animal studies. Furthermore, a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare the immunomodulatory effects of homeopathic remedies with a placebo. The study involved 50 individuals with stage III AIDS and PGL (Persistent Generalized Lymphadenopathy)—swollen lymph nodes in several parts of the body that remain swollen for some time. Results of the study showed statistically significant elevations in CD4 lymphocyte (a type of white blood cell that coordinates the immune system’s response to certain microorganisms such as viruses) counts compared to non-significant results in the placebo group. 1-4
