PBS is an herbal combination that helps strengthen glandular function (especially of the liver and pancreas) to lower blood sugar levels and assist in controlling diabetes. PBS contains herbs that improve digestion and absorption of needed nutrients, reduce inflammation, fight infection, stimulate urine flow to remove toxins, and shrink swollen tissues.

PBS is helpful for treating debility, diabetes, gout, hemorrhage/excessive uterine bleeding, liver ailments, rheumatism, urinary dysfunction and urinary tract infection.

Burdock is especially useful for treating conditions related to chronic toxicity, as it stimulates elimination of wastes via the colon, kidneys, and skin. Clinical studies show burdock improves liver and gallbladder function, perhaps due to its content of bitter glycosides, particularly arctiopicrin. Burdock is particularly well-known as a blood purifier, and has also been used to soothe inflammation in both internal and external tissues. Research indicates burdock is helpful for treating inflammatory conditions resulting from chronic toxicity, including arthritis, gout, heavy metal poisoning, infection, rheumatism, sore throat, and chronic skin conditions. Burdock’s also demonstrates specific antibacterial activity and has been found beneficial for treating urinary tract infections. According to a study in Diabetes Research, an extract of burdock provided a hypoglycemic effect, thus helping to lower blood sugar levels.

Cedar berries timulate urine flow, increase production of digestive fluids, exhibit analgesic (pain-relieving) effects, and fight infection, especially in the urinary tract. Cedar berries also demonstrate astringent actions, which helps stop bleeding, thus explaining the herb’s traditional use for menorrhagia and uterine hemorrhage. Research shows cedar berries exhibit antimicrobial activity in vitro, especially against Candida albicans, E. coli, Pseudonomas aurginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Cedar berries have been used for cystitis, gout, menstrual irregularities, rheumatism, urinary dysfunction, urinary tract infection, as well as diabetes (cedar berries demonstrate some hypoglycemic effects). Cedar berries have been shown to stimulate uterine contractions in animal experiments.

Studies show Golden seal acts as an astringent, producing a vasoconstricting—tightening of the blood vessels—effect. Golden seal’s astringent ability enables it to help tone mucus membranes, which in turn, aids stomach and intestinal disorders, prostate and vaginal complaints, and stops internal bleeding and prevents hemorrhaging. Golden seal acts as a mild decongestant and laxative, relieves excess mucus, and reduces fever and inflammation associated with glandular swelling. Golden seal increases the secretion of digestive enzymes and fluids, especially bile, which helps regulate liver and spleen functions. Golden seal is recommended for numerous gastrointestinal disorders, including colitis, enteritis, gastritis, hemorrhoids, intestinal infections, and peptic ulcers. Berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid found in golden seal, has been studied at length in both clinical and experimental environments for its antibacterial and amebicidal properties. Furthermore, golden seal has been found to potentiate insulin and have a hypoglycemic effect which is beneficial for diabetics. Golden seal is high in vitamin C and trace minerals including cobalt, iron, magnesium, manganese, silicon and zinc. Golden seal also contains vitamins A, E, and the B-complex, as well as calcium and potassium.

Horseradish is a strong digestive stimulant, increasing both gastric juices and appetite. Horseradish stimulates circulation, induces perspiration, increases the production of mucosal fluids to remove allergens and toxins from the respiratory tract, and also acts as an antiseptic, diuretic and expectorant. Horseradish contains an active ingredient called sinigrin, which when crushed, produces allyl isothiocyanate, a substance shown to exhibit mild antibiotic activity against microorganisms in the respiratory and urinary tracts. Horseradish is typically used for asthma, bronchitis, colds, coughs, debility, fever (characterized by coldness), flu, hay fever, rheumatism, and sinus congestion. Horseradish is not recommended for those with low thyroid function or stomach ulcers.

Numerous studies have outlined the effects of Siberian ginseng on mental and physical behavior, and its action as a brain and nerve tonic for promoting mental clarity. Siberian ginseng has been proven to help restore mental ability in the elderly and improve mental resilience during exams for students taking the herb. Siberian ginseng is used mostly for increasing endurance, stimulating circulatory and immune function, and regulating blood pressure. Russian studies have documented Siberian ginseng’s ability to strengthening the body against environmental stress and to improve physical performance. Siberian ginseng has been shown to directly influence the adrenal-pituitary axis, resulting in an increased resistance to the effects of stress, including cold, heat, infection and even radiation. In fact, Russian doctors recommend Siberian ginseng for improving the body’s tolerance to chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Siberian ginseng has also been shown to stimulate production of digestive fluids and help reduce inflammation. Furthermore, Siberian ginseng supports the adrenal, pancreas and pituitary glands to normalize abnormally high or abnormally low blood sugar levels. Siberian ginseng is recommended for anemia, debility, diarrhea, diabetes, fatigue, hypoglycemia, impotence, menopause, poor memory and weak digestion.
